Dental Crown

Dental crowns are a dental treatment applied to the front surfaces of teeth and are used to correct dental problems such as worn enamel, irregular tooth alignment, gaps, changes in tooth color or cracks.

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are also used to cover dental implants or support dental bridges.

You may need a dental crown if:

  • A tooth is severely decayed or damaged.
  • A tooth has undergone root canal treatment.
  • You want to cover a dental implant.
  • You need to restore a broken or worn-down tooth.
  • You’re improving the appearance of discolored or misshapen teeth.
  • A large filling leaves insufficient tooth structure.

Dental crowns can be made from various materials, including:

  • Porcelain or ceramic: Natural-looking and ideal for front teeth.
  • Metal (gold or alloy): Durable and suitable for back teeth.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM): Combines durability and aesthetics.
  • Zirconia: Strong and visually appealing.
  • Resin: Less expensive but less durable.

Typically, it takes 1–2 dental visits:

  • First visit: The tooth is prepared, impressions are taken, and a temporary crown is placed.
  • Second visit: The permanent crown is fitted and cemented.
Some clinics offer same-day crowns using CAD/CAM technology.

Dental crowns are long-lasting but not permanent. With proper care, they can last 10–15 years or longer, depending on the material and oral hygiene habits.
